Watches that changed the world
There are a few moments in history where time stood still; moments where the world had to take notice. Here are a few esteemed watch brands that changed the way time will be perceived forever.
Breitling – For the conquest of discovering the skies. Pilots need reliable and efficient instruments. Breitling is synonymous with perfecting the chronograph – a vital instrument for all pilots. Their one “specialty” was their onboard chronographs intended for aircraft cockpits. This earned them the title of “the official supplier to world aviation”. A leader in the field of mechanical chronographs, Breitling is also in the forefront of electronics in watchmaking. They again made history with the development of their Emergency watch – the world’s first wristwatch equipped with an authentic integrated dual frequency personal locator beacon.
Tag Heuer – Tag Heuer is known for their obsession with the ultimate precision. In 1887, they developed the oscillating pinion that vastly improved the timekeeping accuracy of watches and changed the watchmaking industry forever. In 1916, they again showcased their passion for precision and launched the world’s first stopwatch accurate to 1/100th of a second. All of its counterparts at the time only reached an accuracy of 1/5th of a second.
Mont Blanc – In 1821, they developed the first ever chronograph. Mont Blanc’s philosophy from the very beginning has been to combine all of the historic traditions of the art of Swiss watchmaking with the latest technology.
Longines – This brand pioneered the world in mechanised production. In 1919 they are named the official supplier of the International Aeronautical Federation with their instuments created, ideal for exploration. In 1979, it creates the world’s most slender quartz watch, which involved a lot of new technogolgy being used and paved the way for many future advances.
Frederick Constant – A Frédérique Constant is not just a luxurious timepiece. Behind it is an extensive creative process that involves an inspired design, smart development and unparalleled attention to detail. Frederique Constant is also known for their delicate rounded cases that require many hours of hand polishing. In 1994, Frédérique Constant developed its first Heart Beat watch. The purpose of the Heart Beat development was to show the mechanical nature of their watches. Heart Beat watches has an aperture (small opening) at the position of the balance wheel to show that the movement of the watch is mechanical.
Tissot – Tissot introduced the first mass-produced pocket watch as well as the first pocket watch with two time zones as well as the first anti-magnetic watch in 1929–30. The Tissot company was also the first to make watches out of plastic, stone, mother of pearl and wood. This revolutionized what looks one was able to achieve with watches. Tissot is an official timekeeper for the world championships in cycling, motorcycling, fencing and ice hockey, and was used for the Davis Cup in 1957 and Downhill Skiing in Switzerland in 1938.
Citizen – Citizen is synonymous with the eco-drive movement. It starts with a simple, yet revolutionary concept: a watch that never needs a battery. Citizen Eco-Drive technology harnesses the power of light-from any natural or artificial light source-and converts it into energy.Citizen is recognized as a worldwide leader in advanced technology. From the world’s slimmest LCD watch, to the world’s first professional dive watch with an electronic depth sensor, to the first voice recognition watch, Citizen’s record of world’s first is unmatched.
Although all of these timepieces are legendary for various reasons, owning one of these masterpieces would make you a legend.
The greatest Christmas gift ever is your love… Forever…
Family and friends remain the jewels of all gifts, a special kind of diamond that can be locked in ones heart for eternity. Christmas is a time for remembering, a time to share the goodness of your heart with others, and for expressing with words and gifts what loved ones means to you.
Watches and diamonds, toys and sweets to your hearts content, jewellery that sparkles with the life of a thousand stars… Christmas trees with bright flickering lights and a feast of festive food. Stacks of breath-taking presents – wrapped in colourful paper with giant bows…
We often focus on giving amazing gifts to family and friends for Christmas, so much so that it becomes a contest of outdoing one another. We are too often blinded by Christmas lights and red, red Santa with his big bag of gifts, so much so that we forget that those materialistic gifts symbolizes your love for Family and Friends. We go through the festive season starstruck, chasing after the coolest trends that money can buy. While anxiously looking for the perfect gift in chaotic shopping malls and crowded shops we tragically forget that the best gifts remain the ones you can’t wrap.
Yes – family and friends remain the jewels of all gifts, a special kind of diamond that can be locked in ones heart for eternity. Christmas is a time for remembering, a time to share the goodness of your heart with others, and for expressing with words and gifts what loved ones means to you. It is a chance to make wishes come true and to give something from one’s heart. It is a chance to give a message that will express love and kindness to the ones we care about the most. I can’t imagine anything worse than being surrounded by everything money can buy, but having nobody that cares on Christmas eve. Without the people we love, the warm fiery feeling that Christmas time brings to our human hearts would then have been replaced by a cold empty neverending black hole.
Family is precious and rare – it is a flawless diamond that has carefully been cut to shine with love and lights up souls – this should be cherished. Family represents unconditional love and appreciation, this is something that every human heart yearns for… a given… whether it is deserved or not. Family has a unique kind of love; it will never crack no matter what the pressure is. Love can’t be bought, nor can anyone determine the value of it. Love can’t be wrapped or presented nicely with fancy bows – it shouldn’t be, love shouldn’t be hidden or contained, it doesn’t have to be made up nicely – Love is pure and impressive enough without wrapping, cards or bows. True love sings a beautiful carol of joy that only the heart understands, Christmas is the ideal time to let your heart sing along.
Merry Christmas to your family! On this joyous day, and throughout the new year, may your life be filled with family, friends and pure love. May this be a time of love and appreciation of life’s most beautiful diamonds…

Smart… Swiss… Technology at its best!
Frederique Constant just launched what might be the best smart watch on the market for men, a legitimate Swiss-made watch with a built-in accelerometer for step- and sleep-tracking without having to be charged!
The watch is built in three layers. The dial will be the first, the quartz movement the second and below the movement is the MotionX technology module. This module which is the third layer is equipped with sensors that collect the information from you. Your blood pressure, the number of steps you took and so on. This data can then be transferred to your smartphone or tablet. Why compromise style when it comes to technology?
With central hours and minutes hands, and a “smart” counter at 6. There is a red hand indicating the date at daytime and shows the moon during your sleep. You can even have your sleep goals displayed. These watches don’t need to be recharged but, sometimes needs a power boost sometimes and the battery lasts 2+ years.
With the launch of these new watches, Frederique Constant has definitively managed to preserve its classic design spirit while combining it with the latest smart-technology.
Powered by MotionX®, the watch is capable of connecting with iPhone and Android apps. Modern and classic, this watch builds a bridge between Silicon Valley and Switzerland. There is no digital screen on the Swiss Horological Smartwatch. Instead, the gorgeous hands on the dial display time analogically.
The Frederique Constant Horological smart watch supports state of the art functions such as always on time & date, this watch is precise and very accurate – definitely something that can be considered extremely important when looking at technology. The MotionX activity tracking and MotionX cloud backup and restore will track sleep patterns and update the data via your smartphone app. You can track sleep over days, weeks, months or even years with an accuracy rate of 95%.
The Sleeptracker® and sleep monitoring supports sleep cycle alarms and Get-Active alerts. Better sleep and a more active lifestyle are widely recognized as simple, but effective, positive behavioral changes with these functions – perfect for the ultimate metro man. This watch is also water-resistant to 50 meters.
While the Frederique Constant Horological Smartwatch does connect to your smart phone, it can function entirely autonomously with its sensors. It can track your sleep patterns as well as your walking and running activity.
After you have downloaded the App you are almost ready for action. All of these incredible functions will be visible on your smartphone or tablet once you have connected via Bluetooth.
By sticking to their natural clean cut but practical design Frederique Constant managed to make quite an impressive creation. With a silver clean-cut dial design, leather strap and a 42mm case this watch is stylish and practical with a modern twist. This is a quality product with longevity created from fine materials, crafted by hand with the same detail and perfection that is always evident in the work we see from Frederique Constant.

How to Choose the right Engagement Ring : Making the decision
She is your dear one, she warms up your heart and her touch sends you to a never-ending summer. Her eyes light up with a thousand diamonds when she smiles at you – this is your very own fairytale – Happy Forever After….
Well, congratulations on finding that special someone to spend the rest of your life with! You’ve decided to propose to her and ask her to marry you, but without that very special engagement ring, your fancy date will just be dinner and a movie.
It’s an intimidating journey to find “the ring” for the woman you adore, but choosing an engagement ring doesn’t have to be a confusing situation. We’ve compiled our best advice to keep you and your money safe whilst on your journey to find the ring.
- Set a minimum / maximum budget
Decide what you are willing to spend on the ring. You may have heard advice to set aside about two to three months’ salary on a ring. This is steady advice, although sometimes simply unattainable. Start with about four to six weeks’ worth of pay and be willing to go up to about 3 months salary if necessary.
- Choose your timing
Let’s not forget that the real goal here is to get her to say “yes”. If you want to propose at a certain event or milestone, but can’t afford a ring, don’t delay. Many women love to have an input on the design after she’s already said yes. Promise rings are quite a fast-growing trend!
- Get some good advice
Ask for recommendations for trusted jewellers from friends and family. Make sure they have a good reputation and enjoy long term relationships with their clients. Take care if purchasing overseas as you may have little comeback if the ring is not what you think it is. Often the best, safest deals will be found locally.
- Learn her size
Instead of guessing her size, steal one of her rings to have it sized by a jeweller. She is unlikely to wear a ring already on her engagement finger so find out what happens if the size isn’t right. If you aren’t able to get a ring, get a ring that can be resized or exchanged.
- Know her style
You want to pick a ring that fits your woman’s unique style and preferences. Take note of the type of jewellery she wears. See if you can exchange it if she doesn’t like it.
There are many routes you can go;
Traditional with a modern twist
There’s no shortage of designers playing with the classic rock-on- a-ring. There are a ton of options for you to look at – you can go for stone-covered bands, try a shape that’s more architectural or more free-spirited and organic, or even get her multiple rings that “stack” on her finger.
When your lady is heavily influenced by old-school design and fashion- this is the route you take. Find a vintage ring by talking to your local jeweller.
When you love the rings on display, but none seem like the right one- go ahead and ask for a custom ring. Tell the designer everything you can about your partner and work with them to really nail the design.
Getting Her to Yes: How to Make a Marriage Proposal That Knocks Her Off Her Feet
You have met the one, you are ready to take the next step and give up your messy bachelors apartment… You know that you are not sacrificing your freedom, but instead you are ready to share the rest of your life with the girl of your dreams…
Want to surprise your lady with a breathtaking marriage proposal? Get her to say ‘yes’ with this how-to guide!
- Test the waters: Before thinking about proposing, find out her feelings on marriage in general and whether she dreams of marrying you one day. Having hypothetical discussions helps keep you both up to date about where you stand as a couple.
2. Keep it a surprise: It’s a feat to keep your proposal plans under wraps, but keeping it a secret is the best way to sweep her off her feet! Also be sure to keep it a secret from anyone who may spill the beans and spoil the big surprise inadvertently.
3. Ask her parents for their blessing: In our modern culture, asking for permission isn’t necessary, but for a family-centric person, asking for blessing is the perfect bridge between being perfectly romantic and respectful, in situations like these old-school rules will Apply!
4. Think about her: Why do you want to marry her? What does she do or care about that is very special? Try to incorporate these very specific ideas about who she is into your breathtaking proposal. Being personal and sentimental when planning such an intimate event is never a bad idea.
5. Find the perfect ring: The best engagement rings are the ones that takes her personality into account and is chosen specifically for her. Ask her closest friends and family for advice when visiting jewellery stores. If the idea of marriage has ever crossed her mind, it is very likely that she has a collection worth a Jewellery store of engagement rings on her phone.
6. Keep to a budget: Between the perfect ring and an idyllic proposal, proposing can be expensive. Be smart with your money and only spend what you can afford.
7. Dress appropriately: Make sure you both are dressed appropriately for the location you’ve chosen. If you are surprising her with a hike to the top of a mountain, make sure that she isn’t trying some off-roading in high heels and has a jersey to keep warm.
8. Practice your proposal: It will help manage your nerves and give you a positive outline on what you want to say.
9. Get on one knee: Rather avoid the rehearsed speech from a piece of paper and be brave, speak from the heart! Yes, you look ridiculous, but she’ll love the romantic gesture and appreciate the risk you took. It’s time to be awkward and wear your heart on your sleeve, no need to hold back any emotions, tell her how wonderful she is.
10. Be YOU, don’t force something out of character. Finally: see her eyes sparkle like diamonds get the ‘YES!’ in the bag, and share the news with family and friends!
The day I decided to trade Diamonds for Morganite
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend… or are they? Growing up you have imagined your perfect engagement ring, and after spending so much time drooling over future brides’ shimmering stones at kitchen teas and cocktail parties, you might have a pretty good idea of what your dream ring should look like – white gold with pear shaped centre stone, a decent size… So that Granny doesn’t have to squint when looking at it.
Yes, I was pretty sure that I can make a diamond my BBF for life, it has all the characteristics for a long-lasting friendship; It is tough, bright and brilliant. While having a collection worth ten jewellery stores on my phone I suddenly felt clueless… I had no idea what I wanted anymore. That was until I encountered Morganite for the first time. It was while casually browsing diamond rings in the Déonne le Roux store. I was about to get engaged, This custom designed ring was making a statement; a soft pink stone complimented by the rose gold setting, reflecting its’ surroundings in pretty pink hues – saying: “I am free, feminine and fantastic”. I fell in love instantly but naturally I had to do some research first to see what good and bad characteristics Morganite has that would contribute to a friendship.
Morganite has distinct dichroism and has very few inclusions. Nobody’s perfect, but a shiny stone that’s close to perfect sure does help! Even though Morganite is hard, it is a softer stone than a diamond, so less tough love here! If you set your mind on having a Morganite engagement ring, be prepared to take special care of it.
Morganite has no birthstone month but is believed to have the ability to bring pure love to the wearer; this definitely is a characteristic to take into consideration for an engagement ring.
Morganite is friendly towards your future husbands’ pocket, it is a lot more affordable than diamonds; therefore you can get quite an impressive stone for a fraction of what a diamond would have cost, no more squinting for Granny – a smart, cost effective substitute for a pink diamond!
This fun-coloured stones doesn’t just seem exotic because of its hues. In 1911 it was originally found as a brown stone in Madagascar. The pretty pinks only shows once heat-treated, it is fair to say that Morganite handles heated situations well.
Bright pink, salmon, soft pink, strawberry ice or even lilac, there is a shade of Morganite for everyone, pair this up with rose gold an you are definitely up to date with the latest fashion trend!
For some nothing can ever replace the traditional Diamond ring. Yes, choosing a Morganite ring to get engaged with will be breaking all norms and is definitely not for the weak-willed, but if you are a free spirited bride to be it might be time to create your own traditions… I chose to abandon Diamonds, a loyal and well-known friend, but it just wasn’t for me. Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but I chose to make Morganite my mate!

July Birthstone Ruby
There’s no better way to demonstrate your love than by giving a ruby in celebration of a July birthday. Rubies arouse the senses, stir the imagination, and are said to guarantee health, wisdom, wealth and success in love.
There are three gemstones recognized as birthstones for the month of June, Alexandrite, Pear and Moonstone.
June Birthstone Alexandrite
A relatively modern gemstone, Alexandrite, was first discovered in Russia in 1831 during the reign of its namesake, Czar Alexander II, and is an extremely rare chrysoberyl with chameleon-like qualities.
June Birthstone Pearl
Historically, pearls have been used as an adornment for centuries. They were one of the favourite gem materials of the Roman Empire; later in Tudor England, the 1500s were known as the pearl age.
June Birthstone Moonstone
Moonstone was given its name by the Roman natural historian Pliny, who wrote that moonstone’s appearance altered with the phases of the moon, a belief that held until well after the sixteenth century. A phenomenal gemstone, moonstones show a floating play of light called adularescence, and sometimes shows either a multirayed star or a cat’s eye.

Super-Rare 30.80-Carat Purple Diamond Found in Refuse Pile by South African Tailings Processor
A super-rare 30.80-carat purple diamond with “exquisite gemological characteristics” was salvaged at a diamond tailings plant in Kimberley, South Africa.
Tailings are the residue of the diamond-bearing ore that was processed during the original mining operation.
Oftentimes, the tailings will contain viable gems and this is why Batla Minerals’ Superkolong recovery plant has been set up near DeBeers’ famous Kimberley Mine. The tailings plant recovers 15,000 carats of mostly lower-quality diamonds each month.
However, while sorting through tons of waste material, the company spotted the massive purple rough diamond, which they named the “Kimberley Purple.”
Batla Minerals CEO Jean Retief told NationalJeweler.com that the discovery of the Kimberley Purple is a “clear statement of the (Superkolong’s) viability and its ability to produce something special.”
The Kimberley Purple is currently on display in Antwerp and will be tendered later this month.
Due to their rarity, purple diamonds demand the highest premiums and can yield more than $1 million per carat.
Back in September of 2014, we reported on the “Purple Orchid” diamond, a 3.37-carat fancy intense pinkish-purple diamond that was valued at $4 million, or about $1.18 million per carat.
Israeli diamond company Leibish & Co. introduced the Purple Orchid to the world during the 2014 September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair.
We pointed out at the time that what makes purple diamonds purple is still a scientific mystery. It’s been established that a yellow diamond gets its dazzling color from minute traces of nitrogen in the diamond’s chemical composition and a blue diamond gets its color from boron. When it comes to purple, scientists suspect hydrogen as the stray element, but they’re not so sure.
Purple diamonds can be found in only three locations worldwide — South Africa, Russia and Brazil. While Russia’s purple diamonds have overtones of blue and Brazil’s purple diamonds tend to have a hint of orange, the purples and intense pinkish purples from South Africa display the absolute best brilliance and purple sparkle, according to Leibish.
This fact bodes well for the Kimberley Purple, a South African stone. We can’t wait to see what cut is in store for this fabulous find.

Lucara Recovers 341.9-Carat Gem-Quality Diamond From Its Prolific Karowe Mine in Botswana.
Lucara Diamond Corp. unveiled last week a 341.9-carat gem-quality rough diamond recovered from its prolific Karowe Mine in Botswana — a mine that owns an impressive track record for producing the world’s largest fine diamonds.
The company described the specimen as a Type IIa diamond with exceptional color and clarity. It will be sold along with two other 100-plus-carat Karowe-sourced diamonds.
Type IIa diamonds are considered the purest of all diamonds because they are composed solely of carbon with virtually no trace elements in the crystal lattice.
A rough diamond will typically lose half its weight during the painstaking cutting-and-polishing process. Although it’s still unclear what the final shape and weight of the 341.9-carat rough will be, we’re confident the results will be museum-quality.
“The recovery of this magnificent stone once again confirms the quality of diamonds contained within the Karowe resource,” Lucara president and CEO William Lamb said in a statement.
Last spring, we reported on 13 huge diamonds produced by the Karowe Mine. All were larger than 100 carats and two were larger than 200 carats. Eight of the 13 were classified as gem quality.
Gems of these sizes are extremely rare in nature, but new techniques employed by mining companies have improved recoveries and reduced breakage of exceptionally large stones.
Lucara announced the rollout of X-ray transmission (XRT) imaging technology that will allow the company to increase the effectiveness of its diamond recovery. Because of a diamond’s unique properties, the machines can be calibrated to extract valuable material using X-ray luminescence, atomic density and transparency. New recovery and XRT stations were scheduled to be integrated into Karowe’s main treatment plant by the end of this month.

The biggest ruby discovery of the 21st century is here on our continent – in Mozambique. While the public is largely unaware of Mozambique as a source for rubies, the deposit near Montepuez is considered by the trade to be the largest ruby supplier in the world. Mozambique’s first ruby auction took place in Singapore (July 2014) and brought in a grand total of $34 million US dollar.
Regarding quality, a small but significant proportion of the material is gem quality that requires no heat treatment. While there are some exceptionally large stones, most of the unheated faceted rubies are less than 3 carats. Source: GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
Bling In The New Year!!!!!!
December Birthstones Tanzanite
Discovered in the late 1960s in Tanzania, and found exclusively in this tiny area of the world, tanzanite exhibits a rich violet-blue color for which the gemstone is treasured; often it is heat-treated to achieve this color. Colors range from blue to purple, and tanzanites that are medium dark in tone, vivid in saturation, and slightly violet blue command premium prices. As tanzanite can be less expensive than sapphire, it often was purchased as an alternative. However, it has increased in popularity and now is valued more for its own beauty and brilliance than as a sapphire substitute.
Derived from the Arabic words zar and gun, meaning gold and color, zircon is found in a wide range of colors such as: blue, yellow, orange, brown, green, colorless, and red (the most prized color). For many years colorless zircon was used to imitate diamonds. Folk wisdom grants zircon the power to relieve pain, whet the appetite, protect travelers from disease and injury, to ensure a warm welcome, and to prevent nightmares guaranteeing a deep, tranquil sleep. Major sources of zircon are the Chanthaburi area of Thailand, the Palin area of Cambodia, and the southern part of Vietnam.
The name turquoise, from the French expression Pierre tourques or Turkish stone, originated in the thirteenth century and describes one of the oldest known gemstones. Turquoise varies in color from greenish blue, through robin’s egg-blue, to sky blue shades and its transparency ranges from translucent to opaque. Turquoise is plentiful and is available in a wide range of sizes. It is most often used for beads, cabochons, carvings, and inlays. Although its popularity fluctuates in fashion, it is a perennial favorite in the American Southwest.

Topaz is a gemstone available in a rich rainbow of colours. Prized for several thousand years in antiquity, all yellow gems in antiquity were called topaz. Often confused with citrine quartz (yellow) and smoky quartz (brown), quartz and topaz are separate and unrelated mineral species. The most prized colour of topaz is called Imperial topaz after the Russian Czars of the 1800s and features a magnificent orange body colour with pinkish undertones. Topaz also comes in yellow, pink, purple, orange, and the many popular blue tones.
Citrine, the other birthstone for November is known as the “healing quartz”. This golden gemstone is said to support vitality and health while encouraging and guiding hope, energy and warmth within the wearer. Citrine can be found in a variety of shades ranging from pastel yellow to dark brownish orange. It is one of the most affordable of gemstones and plentiful in nature. Citrine is found most frequently in Brazil, Bolivia, and Spain.
TOURMALINE & OPAL – October Birthstones
Tourmaline has become a favourite gemstone among jewellery designer, and gem collectors the world over. Since it is available in a wide variety of colours, it is ideally suited to almost anyone’s taste. Tourmaline also is known for displaying several colours in the same gemstone. These bi-colour or tri-colour gems are formed in many combinations; gemstones with clear colour distinctions are highly prized. One multi-colour variety is known as watermelon tourmaline, and features green, pink, and white colours bands; to resemble its namesake, the gemstone is cut into thin slices having a pink centre, white ring, and green edge. Tourmaline is found in many localities including Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa, and the USA.
The name opal derives from the Greek Opallos, meaning “to see a change (of colour).” Opals range in colour from milky white to black with flashes of yellow, orange, green, red, and blue. An opal’s beauty is the product of contrast between its colour play and its background. Opal is a formation of non-crystalline silica gel that seeped into crevices in the sedimentary strata. Through time and nature’s heating and molding processes, the gel hardened into the form of opals. The opal is composed of particles closely packed in spherical arrangements. When packed together in a regular pattern, a three-dimensional array of spaces are created that give opal its radiance.
In 1884, the Swiss pioneer Karl Elsener founded a cutler’s workshop. Each product is an expression of Swiss quality and Swiss pioneering spirit. We are now selling the Victorinox Watches in our Menlyn and Kolonnade branch.
Franck Muller Watches
Cristiano Ronaldo already has the honor of being one of the best soccer players ever. Franck Muller paid homage to the Portuguese superstar with seven exclusive Perpetual Calendar Bi-Retro Chronograph timepieces.
Cristiano Ronaldo is flattered. “It’s an honor to have such a special edition dedicated to me, especially from a prestigious brand like Franck Muller.
Ronaldo seldom gives interviews outside mandatory press conferences and sponsor-related duties. Yet his passion for timepieces and the association with Franck Muller saw him making an exception for a cover feature that heralds the 40th issue of “Espiral do Tempo.” In the interview, conducted with Franck Muller sitting by his side, the Real Madrid striker talks about time, timepieces and how his taste in watches has evolved.
