During the month of October, we at Déonne le Roux Jewellers strive to do our part to fight Breast Cancer, and raise awareness about this incidence, affecting millions of women of all ages and ethnicities around the world.
Even in our own country, numerous women suffer from this terrible affliction. The incidence of breast cancer among South African women is increasing and it is one of the most common cancers among women in South Africa. It is the most prevalent cancer amongst Caucasian women and the second most common cancer among African and coloured women.
The designation of October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in South Africa reflects a nationwide drive by public and private healthcare structures to raise awareness of this debilitating disease across all races and class structures. However, we encourage women to make their health a priority all year round, by knowing what is normal for their bodies, and to be aware of the symptoms of cancer.
The risk of breast cancer increases as women grow older, but many women under the age of 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer. All women are at risk, and in particular women with a family history of breast cancer. Being overweight, inactive, consuming alcohol, poor dietary habits, smoking and exposure to chemicals also increase risk.
Regular self-breast examination and regular mammograms are key to early detection. Presenting yourself early for treatment may result in more effective treatment, leading to a reduction in pain and suffering and a significant decrease in the loss of life.
Déonne le Roux Jewellers has been involved in the Reach For A Dream – Queen For A Day initiative for nine years, being one of the proud sponsors of this phenomenal drive. This year we were yet again part of the project held on 12 October. The five-star Castello di Monte Hotel, Déonne le Roux Jewellers, Precis, Shabby Chick Cake Boutique, and Beauty Vibrations all contributed to this unforgettable event.
Queen For A Day affords little girls an entry into a world of pampering, where the focus is placed on making them feel beautiful and confident; something, often missing in a hospital environment. The day was filled with indulging every little girl’s dream of being a “princess “. They were treated to limousines, manicures, pedicures, and makeovers, with a professional photographer capturing the joy that fills every moment. Each girl was crowned Queen For A Day, showing her how beautiful she is, no matter how her illness may affect her life or her appearance.
They were then transported to Castello di Monte for a high tea, and upon arrival Miss World South Africa, Thulisa Keyi crowned each of them: “Queen for a Day”. Here they were surprised and treated yet again by Walter from Déonne le Roux Jewellers who gifted them each a silver Angel Pendant.
We will be giving R10 000 from all sales during October to CANSA in Pretoria to help in their research towards finding a cure and fighting breast cancer. Make sure to stop by our Woodlands or Kolonnade branches and see what great items we have on promotion and help us fight this affliction affecting so many of our mothers, sisters, and partners.
