Engagement ring in macaroons

The origin of the Engagement Ring

THE EVOLUTION OF THE DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING THROUGHOUT HISTORY

A man gets down on one knee. He proposes to his lady. He declares his undying love and promise his loyalty to his beloved. This gesture started when a knight got down on one knee in front of his lord to pledge his allegiance, show obedience and respect. Naturally getting on one knee for their love made sense. Just like the gesture of getting on one knee has a backstory so does the engagement ring. Have you ever wondered where the engagement ring came from?

The Origin of the engagement ring is extremely striking. We think of engagement rings today as a symbol of love. This could not be further from the truth as it was merely a sign of ownership in primitive times. Not so romantic, am I right? Fortunately, times have changed!

A Sign of Ownership

A man gives his future bride an engagement ring upon accepting his proposal to marriage. This tradition originated in Rome. A custom in which wives wore rings attached to small keys. The rings stipulated the ownership of their husbands.  Roman wives’ rings symbolised obedience and mutual love or signified a business contract. The rings were made from iron, copper, ivory, flint, and bone.

Gold rings were later discovered in Pompeii. This led to shiny metal becoming the material of choice. The Romans were strong devotees of owning two engagement rings. They chose to wear an iron ring at home and wear their gold ring in public.

The Engagement Ring as a Symbol of Marriage

The official meaning of the engagement ring was only given in 850 by Pope Nicholas. He stated that the engagement ring represented the man’s purpose to marry with gold as the most favoured material for engagements during that time period.

All in favour of Diamond Engagement Ring

In 1477, the first diamond engagement ring ever recorded was given by Archduke Maximillian to his beloved Mary of Burgundy. He was not a trendsetter and the popularity of the diamond ring only grew a few centuries later.

The trend of using diamonds for engagement rings only sparked in 1947 when the De Beers, a British company started mining diamonds in South Africa.

INTERESTING FACT:  DE BEERS LAUNCHED AN INGENIOUS SLOGAN; “A DIAMOND IS FOREVER”. THEIR CAMPAIGN AIMED TO ENCOURAGE MORE PEOPLE TO USE DIAMOND RINGS FOR ENGAGEMENTS. THE POPULARITY OF THE DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING INCREASED RAPIDLY.

The Significance of Proposing with a Diamond Ring

An engagement ring is more than just jewellery. The ring on its own symbolises the dedication, commitment, and the love that the couple has for each other.

A Diamond ring gives more purpose than just an ordinary engagement ring would. It’s purity and spark signify the commitment a man has to the woman he genuinely loves.

What better GIFT OF LOVE than a diamond engagement ring? Diamonds have been here since the beginning of time and just like your love it is a true miracle. There are billions of people in the word and the fact that two people found each other is somewhat miraculous. A diamond engagement ring embeds the same meaning that defines all odds of finding your soulmate. A diamond is forever and everlasting just like the love between a couple.
